Movie #4 The Proposition

(2005, Australia/UK d. John Hillcoat)

The Proposition is the rare modern day western. It’s extremely brutal and violent at times, but it does so with a painful attention to cinematography and story pacing. It’s quiet, dark, and moody but the brief moments of extreme violence get to you. Set in the outback of Australia, this film’s cinematography – DP Benoit Delhomme – is immaculate. If I were to compare, this is easily superior to Mangold’s 2007 western 3:10 To Yuma.

  1. I would agree that it is superior to “3:10 to Yuma” on every level. I think that the brutality of the violence created a dark and tense atmosphere that honestly made it difficult to sympathize with any of the characters, which I thought was its greatest strength.
