Movie #20 Le Samourai

(1967, France, d. Jean Pierre Melville)

I loved this film. It’s basically about a hitman who does everything perfectly until a minor mistake sets everything on a downward spiral. However, the movie – as strange as this sounds – doesn’t get involved too much with the plot as much as it does with the environment of the plot. It’s more an atmospheric film – involved closely with every single step of a huge process of an intricate plan. The way Melville (who feels a lot like Godard in this aspect) shoots his scenes feels like he is capturing moments rather than a sequence of events.
