Movie #24 The Killing

(1956, US, d. Stanley Kubrick)

I kid you not: this is the best heist film I’ve ever seen. The way it plays with time and focuses on its characters literally keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire film. It contains some incredibly rich sequences of character development and even richer sequences of high tension. It has all the elements of a film noir – the femme fatale, the moody lighting, the shadows, the glorification of the crime, subtle homoerotic messages, etc – but all the making of a classic.
