Movie #25 Do the Right Thing

(1989, US, d. Spike Lee)

Spike Lee’s debut film is an incredible portrait of people clashing on a hot summer day in Brooklyn. It starts off hilarious and quickly descends on a downward spiral into serious conflict. The dialogue is rich and not to say I know anything about Black culture, it’s obvious the film is very personal to Lee (who himself stars as the lead character, Mookie). The film does a great job of toying with the idea of ‘innocence’ from beginning to end, especially with Mookie. It runs a little long, but is totally worth it.
