Movie #47 Public Enemies

(2009, US, d. Michael Mann)

You got to hand it to Johnny Depp for creating a wholly different on-screen gangster that we’ve ever seen before. In such a throw-back film as this, it’s easy to be inspired or fashion your performance after the Bogarts, Munis, or Cagneys that have played characters such as these. But Johnny Depp creates a different, non-sensational John Dillinger – Public Enemy Number One as Edgar J. Hoover famously described him as. In fact, most of the film seems that way: non-sensational. The action doesn’t make you sit up nor do the quick bank robberies nor the chase scenes nor the cool persona Depp exudes. Rather, this film is more than the sum of its parts and I think Michael Mann knows this. As a whole, it’s a well-constructed and realistic picture, that could be argued as uneventful or boring, meaningless or deep, and even average to incredible. I think its somewhere in the middle of the latter.
