Movie #51 The Long Good Friday

(1979/1980, UK, d. John Mackenzie)

The Long Good Friday is a British gangster film that feels a lot like a Hollywood film in disguise. The electronic music is pounding and ceaseless, the one-liners are cliche and cool, and the action is unexpectedly violent. Nonetheless, it’s a great film. Bob Hoskins delivers a great performance as a cool gangster with a more violent past than present and it was kind of cool to see Pierce Bronson way before he was discovered. It’s a loud film and while I enjoyed its theatrics, I would never consider this a “must watch”, though for some reason, England seems to love this film.
