Movie #55 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

(1998, UK, d. Guy Ritchie)

Clever and original, Lock, Stock, if anything, should serve as a lesson on how to make a great film on a budget. Introducing one of the world’s premier and unique directors Guy Ritchie, the film is an inspired take on the underworld that adds to the incredible crime filmography of Great Britain. Ritchie, who has moved on to much larger projects, thankfully hasn’t sacrificed his style or wit in any of his films (save that train wreck of a rom-com called Swept Away starring his now ex-wife Madonna). He went on to make Snatch, some other projects, and has just most recently directed the new Sherlock Holmes. I definitely recommend this film – it’s smart, unexpectedly hilarious (only if you don’t know Ritchie), and one helluva ride.
