Movie #72 District B-13

(2004, France, d. Pierre Morel)

I can imagine the pitch for this film: “All right guys. We got one of the fellas who invented that parkour movement who wants to play the lead in a movie. Let’s write something around that, yeah? We can make up some shit about how there’s a banlieue in Paris where are all the crime is centered and set it there. Who’s in?” As stupid as that sounds, the movie is surprisingly really good. Sure the plot only exists to set up the action scenes but rarely have the action scenes been so worth it. Action movies of late just repeat the same gunfire and the same fights and the same pattern, but here comes a movie where the action is running – where the main point of the fight is not to kill but to get away. David Belle, one of the founders of parkour, plays a lead in the film and performs all his stunts without the use of any CGI or effects. Seriously, check out a clip of this movie on YouTube. It’ll blow your mind away. The plot, as mentioned earlier, works only as a filler but it’s passable enough that the audience doesn’t completely dismiss the movie. The minor twist at the end actually caught me off guard. It’s a short movie and a very, very, very entertaining watch if you are at all into action movies. Luc Besson, the guy behind The Transporter movies and Leon The Professional and The Fifth Element (just to name a few) produced it.
