Movie #77 Lord of War

(2005, US, d. Andrew Niccol)

Lord of War is a film that could have been so much better than it actually was. In my opinion, it all went wrong with the direction. The script was there (minus a few very cheesy lines) and so were the actors (minus Nicolas Cage, who’s only good with an incredible director) – what was missing was a good director. The movie was too simple, too easy to be ever taken seriously as a drama. Niccol’s first mistake is that he never gets the film to feel like it’s started. Every scene’s almost like a montage. It’s rushed, there’s voiceover to 90 percent of the film, and the times with conversations seem like moments to move the plot back into another montage. What should have been a complex and deep film about arms dealing is turned into a amateurish movie that seems more interested in being cool than being good.

  1. I enjoyed this movie enough to buy it. Sometimes simple movies are just what you want to watch.
