Movie #79 The Salton Sea

(2002, US, d. D.J. Caruso)

For some reason, I’ve always been a fan of Caruso’s work. Beginning with Disturbia, I honestly thought the guy had an eye, even though lately he hasn’t been using that as much. The Salton Sea is his feature film debut and it’s a movie about his filmmaking style just as it is about speed. I wish he would have used some of the more original visuals throughout the film, but when they popped in here and there, they were met with a lot of enthusiasm. Val Kilmer delivers another anchor-worthy performance as a…drug-taking, police-ratting, FBI-collaborating, drug-dealing trumpeter with a vengeance. No exaggeration. The film has some very solid reviews although when I try to place the film into the larger context of this MAD Challenge, I think I’m probably going to end up forgetting it. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before – merely a few genres combined. Most of it is pretty formula, apart from the weird and disturbing character violence that occurs halfway through. If you’re looking for an original vengeance story though, I’d just stick with Memento.
