Movie #80 Death to Smoochy

(2002, US, d. Danny DeVito)

Strangely unsettling and off-putting, I could safely say I hated this film. I understand where it was trying to go and what it was trying to be. After all, according to the plot details, it is “set in the dog-eat-dog world of children’s television”. Trying to blend adult humor with a backdrop of colorful children’s programming sounds like a very interesting endeavor but Death to Smoochy, unfortunately, didn’t accomplish that. It felt like an episode of The Road Runner if it were given the opportunity for a hard “R” rating. Robin Williams won a Razzie for his performance, and if you don’t know what that is, it’s like an Oscar for bad performances. Though I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was the Worst Supporting Performance of 2002, it definitely didn’t add much to the depth of the character he could have been portraying. But the fault for that also lies with the amateurish writing of Adam Resnick and the flip-floppy direction of Danny DeVito. Tonally, it was all over the place and, even for a comedy, that’s one place you don’t want to be.
