Movie #130 The Proposal

(2009, US, d. Anne Fletcher)

Sure it’s filled with cliches, and sure it’s filled with every single romantic comedy plot point that’s ever come out but the best thing about The Proposal is the one thing most romantic comedies search for and search for but very rarely actually find: chemistry. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock wouldn’t seem like an ideal on-screen couple but their chemistry is comparable to that of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in Charade. I wouldn’t say I laughed out loud too much which for a film like this is not a good sign, but it was because of this chemistry that I truly enjoyed watching the film. Its large ensemble, primarily the exquisite Betty White in her neo-breakthrough performance of the decade, is fantastic and its because the actors are so generally talented, they are able to fly above the material they often find themselves in. The film is easy to watch, occasionally funny, but very, very lovable.
