Movie #131 Paths of Glory

(1957, US, d. Stanley Kubrick)

Paths of Glory is about the sometimes unspeakable things people do to get up in the world – more specifically, it is about the vices high ranking members of the army make that place more low-ranking servicemen at their mercy. I went in expecting an action film but what I – to my pleasant surprise – instead got was an incredibly tense courtroom drama. A critical success but a commercial failure, this Stanley Kubrick film was more of a showcase for Kirk Douglas’ talent than Kubrick’s directorial style. Though Douglas does deliver a phenomenal performance, I believe it is Kubrick’s controversial spin on this French military event that is real star of the picture. Aided by sweeping visuals inspired by Max Uphols’, this taut drama delivers even decades after its original release.
