Movie #133 Hot Rod

(2007, US, d. Akiva Shaffer)

Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Jorma Taccone, Will Arnett – just to name a few. Hot Rod is one of the stupidest but silliest movies I’ve seen so far. Superior to Napoleon Dynamite in laughs and cast, this film should also be noted for its strong narrative structure. Sure, it’s filled to the brim with moments that just don’t make a shred of sense but unlike comedies of a similar taste, Hot Rod tries its best to create an arc and a story to sort of support its ridiculous premise and meaningless jokes. But as stupid as they may be, you got to give the Lonely Island crew a little credit for creating moments that were both stupid and creative. Remixing “Cool Beans”, “2 Legit 2 Quit”, “Random 80’s dance sequences, and extended pain sequences are – to be borrow a line for Samberg’s character Rod – “just a sample” of the stuff that fills the film. If you don’t like stupid humor, by all means stay the hell away from this movie. But if you’re into it at all, check it out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
