Movie #161 Paul
(2011, UK/US, d. Greg Mottola)
From the director of Superbad and the writers of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz comes another genre-spoofing movie – this time, the alien film. Consisting of a stellar supporting cast including Jason Bateman, the incredible Kristen Wiig, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch, Bill Hader, and Seth Rogen, Paul is a very funny movie. The always funny Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are the two leads in the film and the two of them (who are the two writers as well) craft one of the better spoof movies of the decade. Though it never stops making inside jokes to…for lack of a better word…alien geeks, it never alienates its core consumer crowd, relying on very humorous bits, one-liners, and outrageous characters. Though not as funny as I hoped it would be, Paul is a film that is worth the price of a ticket and significantly much better than the average comedy of late. Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are as lovable as usual and Seth Rogen makes for a great crude alien. And though the most broadly accesible film in their short filmography, Paul just isn’t as good as their previous two indie hits. It releases in theaters in a couple of weeks.
