Movie #252 Cars 2

(2011, US, d. John Lasseter, Brad Lewis)

The time had to come. Pixar had to make a bad film. It was bound to happen. After 10 straight knockouts, they had to misstep. But in all honesty, at least here they went down in the flames of a burning car, no pun intended. Cars 2 represents everything that is wrong about the modern animated film. Don’t think for a second, though, I am insulting Pixar. They still hold the world’s best record for great films and in my opinion, are still Hollywood’s most creative thinkers. But this film really didn’t do much for me. Sure, the kids in the audience enjoyed the film but a Pixar film is more than that. It’s always been about something. Something specific. And here, that something was missing completely. There was no theme to this film, and though it took you all across the world, it never brought with it that special Pixar something that their films are known to possess. Sure, it’s action-packed, its lines are well-delivered, and the graphics are better than ever before, but Cars 2 lacks the magic of its predecessors. It’s not a bad film, and under any other production company, would have gone largely unnoticed as simply a decent film. But it’s Pixar we’re talking about. And I, at least, expect much better from these people.
