Movie #256 Austin Powers in Goldmember

(2002, US, d. Jay Roach)

It would be a shame to all the other great films I’ve watched in this MAD Challenge if I wrote about this film as much as I did the others. First off, I never found Mike Meyers that funny. Secondly, his Austin Power character was just always a little too over-the-top to me. All the “moley-moley” jokes coupled with the toilet humor and weird skin stuff just never turned me on. But that said, Goldmember does have a certain charm to it and you have to hand it to Mr. Roach for not throwing a high-grossing franchise completely down the tubes. It’s pretty much the same here, just a little time travel thrown in to make things a little groovier. Mike Meyers continues to add to the number of characters he can play: Dr. Evil now resides behind the Hollywood sign and Powers must travel back in time to seek the help of fat, Dutch and ladies man Goldmember (also Meyers) to stop Evil’s diabolical plan to destroy the world. Nothing new, though. And there’s even a few star cameos from Kevin Spacey, Tom Cruise, and yes… even Steven Spielberg.
