Movie #262 Horrible Bosses

(2011, US, d. Seth Gordon)

This summer hasn’t been that nice to comedies. Considering the number of failed ones, 2011 has thus far proved quite dismal for the genre. I can’t say Bosses comes much closer to a hit, but because of its cast and their chemistry, it does manage to slightly stand out of the crowd. The plot is simple: Think Strangers on the Train (referenced nicely in a scene in the film) meets 9 to 5. Three friends, each sick and tired of their terrible excuses for human being bosses, decide to kill the other’s boss. These friends are played by Jason Sudeikis (of SNL fame), Jason Bateman, and Charlie Day (from the FX show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). Their chemistry and banter alone is enough to see the film. The comedic dialogue isn’t that great but it’s made funny because of these people, particularly the fresh face of Day. His boss is the sex-craved maniac dentist Dr. Julia Harris (played by a very sexy Jennifer Aniston). Bateman’s boss, played by Kevin Spacey, is a man who will stop at no obstacle, including the lives of others, to achieve his goals. Finally, we have the coke-addicted, selfish, and balding Bobby Pellitt (played by Colin Farell), who in his first discussion with Sudeikis, orders him to fire all the cripples and fatties from the office. So, one night in a bar, they come up with a plan to kill all of them, eventually asking for help from their very own murder consultant by the name of Motherfu**er Jones (Jamie Foxx). You can imagine the rest. And though I wasn’t laughing as much as the rest of the audience was, Horrible Bosses is still a very good comedy, especially if you’re into the raunchy. Filled with pop culture references and slapstick humor, it’s one of those films that feels a lot like the rest but just happens to have a better logline. But if you aren’t into these raunchy flicks, what choices do you have in the comedy department at the theaters these days anyways?
