Movie #281 The Lost World: Jurassic Park

(1997, US, d. Steven Spielberg)

There are a lot of people who give this movie crap and call out Spielberg for being a sell-out. I, on the other hand, think this is one of those rare sequels that, save for the magic of the original, is almost on par with the first film in the franchise. The Lost World takes place a few years after the incident at Jurassic Park. With the tagline for the film as “Something has survived”, it’s pretty obvious where the filmmakers take the film from there. But the way Spielberg is able to tell an extremely compelling story from a fairly generic plot is beyond me. The casting is superb, especially with the additions of Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore. But the real hero is, once again, Spielberg. The way he is able to take another B movie concept and turn it into something far larger than the original film in scope without sacrificing story is truly a gift. The Lost World features more dinosaurs, larger dinosaurs, and much, much more manic and mayhem. But somehow, it does so without ever feeling like a sell-out. It stays within its own story and always captivates the audience. A modern blockbuster at is best, this is the film that serves as an example to what sequels should be: bigger and better, but never forgetting its roots, or in this case, its eggs.
