Movie #286 Jurassic Park 3

(2001, US, d. Joe Johnston)

This time only produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park 3 is still a fun ride, though it lacks some of the real heart and magic the first two had. There’s something about dinosaurs facing characters we love that is innately intriguing, because describing this film in a couple of sentences makes it sound really bad. It’s the experience while watching it you must judge. The film adds new dinosaurs, some cheap dinosaurs, and a very strange island, but somehow it works. I don’t know if this is because the movie itself has that ‘je ne sais quoi’ factor around or it is just because it is part of one of the most incredible filmmaking franchises in Hollywood history, but for whatever reason, Jurassic Park 3 doesn’t lose the tension or the intrigue possessed by its predecessors. The writing is cheesier, characters who we had seen enough of are back at it for another go, and some strange child subplots are added here, but again, this film is more than the sum of its parts. Sure it has the talents of Sam Neill, William H. Macy, and Tea Leoni here – but even with all of them included in a written analysis, this film is one of those films I am still surprised at that I liked. It follows the cliche sequel trick of a rogue mission and throws on top of it every trick Hollywood has to make a sequel bigger and better, but again, it just clicks. And it clicks wonderfully.
