Movie #289 Mother

(2009, South Korea, d. Joon-ho Bong)

Disturbing but powerful, Joon-ho Bong scores another hit following his incredible The Host with Mother. It is a film that puts into the limelight how far a mother will go for her son. But in this case, the details are what make the picture. The son in this case is charged with first degree murder in a brutal case. Mentally challenged, the son is not only not smart enough to defend himself, but he also finds himself signing a confession for the murder. The mother then goes on her own hunt to find the killer. Leading her into the complex depths of the personal life of the victim, it is the quest of the mother that the film deals itself with. It is a quest at times so dark, it seems impossible our lead character will ever find her way back. It is film that shows her commit some heinous actions but also question the morality of them. Is it OK considering the circumstances? Or should no one ever swoop down to the level she does in the film? It is a powerful and visually magnificent piece of storytelling and once again, showcases the best of South Korean filmmaking.
