Movie #306 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

(2003, New Zealand, d. Peter Jackson)

Never having been a fan of the Lord of the Rings series, there is still a lot to admire about its final film. To be honest, I’ve never hated the franchise, I just never cared for it. To me, Harry Potter was always the better option of literature and film. Though that doesn’t mean I don’t respect the films. Just listening to a couple stories of production of these films is enough to humble any aspiring filmmaker. And that said, Return of the King is one of the grandest and most epic tales of warfare, battle, and love ever to be put on celluloid. It is a film so magnificently thought out, so impeccably planned, and so beautifully executed. It is a film that combined the efforts of tens of thousands of people, each contributing a small thing to what turned out to be one of the most memorable films of all time. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture as well as bunch of other technical awards, The Return of the King is an incredible amalgamation of story, character, and visual. No shot seems cheap, no character seems simple, and no action seems non-story based. It is a magnificent film, and that is coming from someone who is not a fan. It’s sad there are filmmakers out there like Peter Jackson. It’s hard to aim for the best when stuff like this blocks your path.
